The Importance of Post Production Skills

“A picture is a secret about a secret, the more it tells you the less you know.” ― Diane Arbus

I love these examples from my portfolio of the importance of retouching skills in choosing your photographer for any event or job! On the first image I have done some delicate skin smoothing, and hair thickening. Eyelash darkening and lengthening with texture of eyeshadow kept intact. Lipstick shine increased and teeth whitened. Color balanced and then stylized, while keeping a realistic skin tone on subject.

I always shoot manual for full control, because even an underdeveloped image (such as the raw “before” image of Christina in the Corvette) will still turn out better than giving full control to the camera. More importantly, you can see the delicate retouching that leaves Christina looking her best, realistic, and true self and not like a silicone android! This was a beautiful spur of the moment candid shot that I had not anticipated, and because I did not need to worry about stopping even for a second to adjust my controls from the bright daylight we had been shooting in just before, I was able to capture a truly real moment of pure joy, knowing I could perfect the image. No hesitation, just a pure capture.

It is so important for the photographer you choose to have expert capabilities in photo retouching. Without awesome retouching capabilities you may be stuck with dull or unpleasantly “plastic” looking images! Go pro, and choose me, Chicago!

Photographer & Owner of Lumine Photography. You already know I love capturing the human experience through photographs and films. Did you also know I enjoy making friends with the ravens & crows (my bird call is pretty great!) on my block, swimming in Lake Michigan, & pausing a film to take notes when I think a scene is perfectly lit?
